Alfie Solomons

Precursor to Jack Spot, Alfie Solomons led the Bessarabian Tigers a Jewish gang that terrorised the Whitechapel area of London prior to WWI. The name derived from a southern Russian territory on the Romanian border and their operations centred on Camden Town racetrack were many of the bookies were Jewish. The Bessarabian Tigers protected the Jewish bookies while blackmailing and extorting money off Caucasian customers. “The faintest shadow of protest on their [the customers] part at this blackmail and the gang descended on them in force armed with guns, knives and such weapons as broken bottles.”  – George W Cornish former Scotland Yard detective
