Alfred Redl

AZL flag holder TransparentAlfred Redl (March 14th, 1864 – May 25th, 1913) was a homosexual Austrian officer though rumoured to be a Jew who rose to be head of Austro-Hungarian counter-intelligence. Redl was born in Lemberg, Galicia, Austrian Empire (now Lviv, Ukraine) and attended the War School in Vienna. Redl joined the Intelligence Bureau of the Austro-Hungarian General Staff and in 1900 was assigned to the Russian Section. Caught in a compromising position by Russian agents as early as 1901 placing his career prospects above that of his duty in 1902 Redl passed a copy of Austro-Hungarian war plans to the Russians to prevent them exposing him as a homosexual.
