Alan Shatter

AZL flag holder TransparentAlan Joseph Shatter (born 14 February 1951) is a Jewish politician in the Republic of Ireland. He is a Teachta Dála (TD), member of the lower house of the Oireachtas (the Irish Parliament) for the Dublin South constituency. Born in Dublin to a Jewish family Shatter has been to Israel a number of times, including to work on a kibbutz as a young man. Shatter is the only Jewish member of Dáil Éireann (lower house) but has proposed much of the legislation. While in opposition, he published more Private members’ bills than any other TD and his bills were successful in making changes in areas such as health, sport and justice. Even prior to becoming a member of the Oireachtas, Shatter was mocking measures inherent within a 1979 Family Planning bill implying the havoc he intended to wreak on European values. Shattner became Minister for Justice and Equality and Minister for Defence in March 2011 and during that time proposed Ireland’s first formal Visa Waiver Programme.
This programme allows immigrants to enter the Irish Republic without the need for a visa. Shatter said that his Department had recently finalised new immigration procedures that will facilitate the easy embarkation at ports of entry making Ireland an attractive immigration destination.
