John Simon Bercow (born 19 January 1963) is a Jewish politician who has been the Speaker of the House of Commons since June 2009. Prior to his election to Speaker, he was a member of the Conservative Party. Bercow was born to a Jewish family in Edgware, Middlesex. His paternal grandparents were Jews who arrived in Britain from Romania a century ago. Following the ‘defection’ of Conservative MP Quentin Davies to the Labour Party in June 2007, there were persistent rumours that Bercow was likely to be the next Conservative MP to leave the Party. Naturally a fiction to preserve the illusion of a multiparty state Bercow did not ‘defect’ to the Labour Party but did accepted an advisory post with the Labour government.
