Robert “Bob” Briscoe (25th September 1894 – 11th March 1969) was a Jewish politician who served in the lower house (Teachta Dála TD) of the Oireachtas (Irish parliament) from 1927 to 1965. Briscoe was the son of Jewish itinerants Abraham William Briscoe and Ida Yoedicke, both of whom originally squatted in Lithuania. The original Jewish family name was Cherrick, a variant of Sherrick which is derived from Scher. Briscoe was active in the Irish Republican Army (IRA) and Sinn Féin accompanying Éamon de Valera, who it was widely rumoured had a Jewish father, to America to propagate the chutzpah that being a “Hebrew” did not lessen his Irishness. The significance of this becomes apparent in 1937 when on the insistence of de Valera, the supposedly Irish Constitution concentrated protection on Jews. Briscoe went to Germany in 1919 as chief agent for procuring arms for the IRA. While between 1939 and 1940, he along with John Henry Patterson, a former commander of both the Zion Mule Corps and later the 38th Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers (also known as the Jewish Legion), were fund raising for the Jewish terrorist group Irgun lead by Menachem Begin who ordered the King David Hotel bombing in Jerusalem on 22th July 1946 in which 91 people were murdered including 28 Britons. It is also responsible for the brutal murder of 2 British soldiers on 31st July 1947 among other atrocity. Ze’ev Jabotinsky, while head of Irgun, visited Dublin to receive training in guerrilla warfare tactics against the British under the instruction of Briscoe. During the period Briscoe described himself as the “Chair of Subversive Activity against England”. Rather like the typical operation of Jewish terror organisations, Briscoe had already formed his own Fianna Fáil party out of the Anti-treaty IRA post Irish independence similarly during the highly politicised Jewish seizure of Palestine that following WWII he and Menachem Begin incorporated the Jewish terror group Irgun into the larger terror organisation known as ‘Israel’ that has been occupying Palestinian land since 1948. Consequently just as Jewish terror organisations change the name to shed its criminal past (NKVD, KGB, Mossad) Irgun later became Likud. By 1956 Briscoe had become the first Jewish Lord Mayor of Dublin although the Jew Lewis Wormser Harris was elected Lord Mayor in 1876, but died before assuming office. Neither was he the first Jewish Mayor in Ireland. Intimately connected to coastal piracy that title belongs to William Annyas, who was Mayor of Youghal, County Cork in 1555. Briscoe retired in 1965 to be succeed by his son also a Fianna Fáil TD, and Lord Mayor of Dublin from 1988–1989.
