Jews in Australia
The first Jews to arrive in Australia were eight convicts transported to Botany Bay in 1788 aboard the First Fleet. By the time transportation ceased in 1845 it is estimated that of those who arrived about 800 were Jewish. The average age of the Jewish convicts was 25 suggesting political agitation and/or Zionist connections. Jews in Australia have also had the chutzpah to suggest ‘aboriginal’ connections.
