In 1908 Aehrenthal secretly engineered an agreement between Austria and Russia to annex Bosnia Herzegovina instigating the Bosnian crisis and destabilising that whole area of Europe, thus fracturing Europe’s exposed and delicate treaty system directly leading to WWI.
